Show Review – Giving Back is the New Black

events 1 Comment by jet

With so many fantastic fashion events in town, it is hard to get to them all. If you missed out on the Giving Back is the New Black Annual Charity Fundraiser/Hair & Fashion Show show last Friday, check out the review by Fashion Utah fan Whit Mayes:

Whit Love: “This fashion show made me feel like I was in NYC, the location, food and the set up was great! I had no idea how many great fashion events Salt Lake City provides! I loved seeing all the different clothes people were wearing to the fashion show.”

Whit on Utah’s fashion: “Its great to see other people with the same passion that Whitney and I have for fashion in Salt Lake City.”

Thank you to the lovely Whitney duo (seen left) for sharing their experience!

Apricot Lane in Provo

Take it from someone that has been to Hollywood after parties and orchestrated events for Beverly Hills boutiques, Apricot Lane has the “x- factor.” I know that is beyond cheesy to say, but have you ever been blown away by a boutique or an atmosphere and then unable to describe it to your friend afterward? That is how I feel about Apricot Lane in Provo. I am going to describe it to you as if I am telling you while we’re out to lunch, but this is definitely a boutique you have to see for yourself.

Right before guests enter a Hollywood after party, the room is pristine. The chandeliers sparkle and the room is electric. There’s always something special about the event and if you’re lucky you’ll catch a few glimpses of that “wow” moment before you get back to work throughout the night.

Although I was at no Hollywood event, this is how I felt as I walked through Apricot Lane in Provo. Decorated remarkably similar to a few events I’ve worked in Beverly Hills, this year-old boutique has that “wow” factor. It happened to me as soon as I opened the door and saw that perfect moment which invited me in – the lovely Kate folding some jeans.

Unlike some shopping experiences, when you visit Apricot Lane, you feel an instant welcome. The shop is much more a community than a store, as employees know your name and oftentimes know exactly what you want before you even get there (don’t worry repeat customers – they’ll give you a call when they get that piece you’ve been dying for).

When asked who their typical customer is, no one can give a singular answer, as they cater to so many different ages, types and styles of women. It is clear that Apricot Lane wants to provide looks for a variety of body shapes, so for you pears (like me), there’s hope! They have pieces that can take you from day to evening, and at a price point many can afford ($6 shirts to $100 designer jeans).

But despite the wide variety of options and styles, the thing that sets Apricot Lane apart for me is found in the details. Whose husband/boyfriend wouldn’t love watching the football game as we fashionistas shop? Well, take him to Apricot Lane ladies! He’ll be happy!

Can’t find the perfect outfit for that garden party? No worries, the girls working the counter have you covered. Each girl has a unique sense of style, personality and age – so they’ve got your look and body shape covered.

Want a unique piece no one has? You guessed it – Apricot Lane! It is all in the details ladies! When I was perusing the store, I saw tons of necklaces (I’m an accessories junkie, true story). I saw this cat necklace and liked the shape, but as soon as I put it on I saw the details that set it apart: a ball of yarn. A fish. I fell instantly I love. These details set the piece apart and truly enriches an outfit. I’m going to fight my way to the guitar pick necklace during my next visit, so forgive me if my elbows are flying.

To sum it up, you get a little of everything at Apricot Lane: community, detail, unique items and an in-store BFF to shop with. You won’t be disappointed with the clothing quality, and for all those toting kids, you’ll soon have a waterpad right out front for the kids to play on (like the Gateway). And for us adults – hey, it never hurts to take a few minutes to dodge water streams as you cool off during a hot day – right?
But don’t take it from me – you’ve got to see it to believe it. Apricot Lane in Provo is an experience you’ll wear with you – from the streets of the 801 to the stars on the Walk of Fame.

The runway show, at the Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center this Tuesday, April 17 at 7:30 pm, is based on the theme of cars and speed. The show is sure to be full of “fashions that move you.”

So grab your keys and take a drive to a world of new fashion and find out what talent is about to hit the Utah fashion scene.

The Ban On Stripes Has Been Lifted

We’ve all seen them, and if you’re like me, you were always told that stripes are fashion’s devil. Now, that might sound a little extreme, but considering that stripes were originally a controversial religious garment (much like a burqa today), it seems fitting that it takes someone feeling a “fashion radical’ to adorn this progressive statement.

Sure, a Pope once banned stripes among monks and jailbirds wore them, but today, stripes are a statement. Take the thin nautical stripe. It says sophistication. Bold stripes are a little more rock-and-roll, and if you’re neither of the extremes, there are a few medium stripes in between.

The key to stripes though, is knowing how to wear them. So pull up your screen and let’s discuss some tips and tricks:

Horizontal stripes can be your friend – if you wear them right. The less “white space” or space between the stripes you have, the less they will emphasize your curves. The more space you have between your stripes the more slimming and flattering they will be.

Petite bodies generally want more petite stripes. Larger bodies can take larger stripes. There are some exceptions to this, but just like a pattern, bigger stripes will be less flattering on smaller bodies, so keep in mind the rule above and chose a stripe width that works with your shape.

Stripes can draw attention. These days we have clothing with stripes going multiple directions or only on half of a garment. Where your stripes lead is where people’s eyes will go first. Don’t believe us? Take a peek at this cute Q Clothing dress to your left. Where do you look? Where the stripes tell you to!

Be brave. Stripes are not for blending in, so take a chance and have some fun this season!
